ABS-CBN Foundation and Seacology launched the Play for the Mangroves Philippines, a first of its kind in the Philippines and Asia. This play-and-learn activity sought to educate and inspire the youth through an immersive experience that combined environmental education with sports and recreation.

The event was first held at Gubat National High School in Sorsogon, where around a hundred youth representatives from different school organizations and classes participated. Through guided tours and interactive activities, the participants learned the vital role of mangroves in protecting coastal communities and supporting marine life. After all the learning sessions, the participants gathered for a table tennis sports fest which further built stronger connections among peers and nature.

One of the highlights of the program is the handover of sports equipment for the school’s selected activities. This plays a significant role in the success of the event, as Play for the Mangroves uses sports and interactive learning to raise environmental awareness. By combining these elements, the initiative aims to inspire a generation of Earth Warriors who are passionate about protecting ecosystems and promoting sustainability. This mission aligns with Seacology’s commitment to preserving island habitats and supports the ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bantay Kalikasan program, which advocates for environmental conservation.

“It was truly a delight to witness the extensive planning and commitment from everyone to come together so beautifully. Our goal to instill a deep appreciation for mangrove education in the hearts of the younger generation as we strive for a safer and more sustainable future is becoming a reality,” Sarah Agcaoili, Head of the ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bantay Kalikasan program, shared.

“I was really excited to see what started as a plan is now unfolding right before my eyes. The event was a success not just because it turned out the way we hoped, but because it allowed us to discover touching stories along the way,” said Ricel Almadovar, Seacology Project Lead for Play for the Mangroves Philippines.

Almadovar shared, “One in particular stands out: a boy who once loved sports but stopped attending classes and seemingly lost his passion. Today, he showed up with so much energy, skill, and determination, smashing every ball his way. It was heartwarming to see him shine again. This event reveals the endless possibilities and the impact it brings to every participant.”

Following its success in Gubat, Sorsogon, the Play for the Mangroves continued its journey to Lobo, Batangas, at Lagadlarin Olo-olo Elementary School, where it incorporated basketball into the program. This expansion emphasized the importance of bringing environmental education to more communities, fostering a broader understanding of the ecological significance of mangroves, and empowering the youth to take action for their environment.

This initiative is vital as the Philippines faces the growing impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and stronger typhoons. Educating the youth about the importance of mangroves in mitigating these effects is essential for inspiring them to protect our environment. Mangroves serve as natural barriers against storm surges and store large amounts of carbon, helping combat global warming.

With Play for the Mangroves, ABS-CBN Foundation and Seacology aim to engage more schools and communities in the Philippines in the hands-on cultivation of knowledge and nature. This program highlights the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable environmental goals and the crucial role of youth in shaping a greener, more resilient future.
