Founded in 1998, Bantay Kalikasan is AFI’s crusade to protect and enrich our country’s natural environment. We do this by bringing together expertise from various sectors of society for dynamic collaboration.
Among its legacy projects include the rehabilitation of the La Mesa Watershed and the clean-up of the tributaries of the Pasig River.

The Problem
The Philippines, with its rich biodiversity, faces environmental challenges – even touted as the 3rd contributor to plastic waste worldwide. This, coupled with the lack of scientists and community participation puts the country at risk, thus the need for inclusive and long-term solutions.
Our Response
We are committed to safeguarding the environment through comprehensive and sustainable programs, as well as empowering communities to be active stewards of nature. We do this through the following:
Citizen Science
Connecting with scientists to empower communities in key biodiversity areas with the skills, knowledge, and data to protect their ecosystem
EcoCamps
Delivering an immersive learning experience for students, teachers, and communities on the diversity and protection of our marine environment and species
Sustainable Consumption
Promoting the proper transport, recovery, treatment, and disposal of hazardous wastes in partnership with accredited transports/treaters
The Verde Island Passage
The citizen science program surely helped me. When I share and teach others about the reef and the ocean they understand the importance and connection of these resources to their lives.
