Samsung Electro-Mechanics Philippines Corp. (SEMPHIL) conducted an employee engagement activity with ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) and its partner communities in Lagadlarin and Olo-Olo in Lobo, Batangas. AFI’s sustainable livelihood arm, GaLing Pamayanan, engaged 32 employees through its community engagement project, ‘Kasanayan sa Pamayanan.’

Bamboo Raft Ride to Olo-olo
The day-long event featured a mini-lecture on the types and role of mangroves in coastal ecosystems, followed by interactive sessions like mangrove bingo and nipa weaving. The employees also rolled up their sleeves for a coastal cleanup along the shores of Olo-Olo and painted doors to improve Eco Park’s amenities.
Melvic Cabasag, Galing Pamayanan Project Development Officer, shared the program’s impact on these ecotourism sites and how partners like SEMPHIL help sustain the community initiatives.
“Nagkaroon sila ng additional income para sa mga pamilya nila. Karamihan sa kanila ay nakapagtapos at nakakapagpaaral na ng kanilang mga anak. Bukod doon, talagang na-empower sila at natuto sa kahalagahan ng mangrove sa kanilang komunidad.”
[Because community members gained additional income for their families, most of their children have graduated, while some can now send them to school. Aside from that, they have truly been empowered and have learned the importance of mangroves in their community.]

Amelia Robillos, Safety, Health, and Environment Planning Manager shared SEMPHIL’s commitment to environmental sustainability: “One of SEMPHIL’s commitments is to participate in the conservation of our environment and to sustain it for the future of the young generation. So, this is a really great experience and to think na nag-e-enjoy ka pa rin.”

Albert Guma, Senior Manager for Safety, Health, and Environment at SEMPHIL for 27 years, shared how his personal dedication aligns with the company’s mission to make a difference.
“This kind of activity is already a passion for me. So, regardless of where the location is, as long as it’s for the community and the environment, it’s an excellent opportunity for me. And the people are so accommodating. Masyado silang open sa bisita na nakakataba rin ng puso.”
