Like many Spanish colonized countries with a strong Catholic faith, Filipinos have adopted many traditions, such as attending “Misa de Gallo” or the midnight mass on Christmas eve. It’s no wonder Patricia “Patti” Ramos was inspired by the tradition of Misa de Gallo. By playing on the literal translation of “mass of the rooster”, she created a piece that features farm animals, as if gathered in prayer and awaiting on Christmas eve.
“This version is my second time creating this artwork. I had an assignment in college to create a Christmas card for a class, and I wanted to tap into my experience as a storyteller,” Patti explains. “Animals often play a big part in Christmas stories, and I thought it would be cute to feature them in their holiday celebration.”
Like many creatives, Patti remembers expressing herself best through the visual arts after she learned to hold a pencil. Growing up, her influences were immensely diverse, from watching Disney films to reading children’s books. Encouraged by her family, teachers, and classmates, she honed her drawing skills, turning them into her passion and a significant part of her career, alongside writing and art education.
Her proudest moment is being surrounded by peers who understand the challenges and successes of working as an illustrator. Having that support, guidance, and wisdom, and being recognized as part of the community, has been invaluable and essential, especially when she was encouraged to pursue a more conventional and stable job.
Patti primarily works with digital media, using gouache, colored pencils, and watercolor. Graduated Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts with a bachelor’s degree in visual arts; some of her notable published works are “Ang Alamat ni Nina Gigantes” and “Ang Gusto ni Chabibi”.
Christmas is truly a special season for giving, especially during uncertain times when kindness and gratitude are most needed. The ABS-CBN Foundation and Ang INK are excited to present the Christmas e-cards as a unique way to share love and create an impact on the lives of those who need them most.
