In a commitment to decrease recyclable and hazardous wastes within the Freeport, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) launched its 15th recyclables collection event in a bid to become the first carbon-neutral economic zone in the Philippines. The ABS-CBN Foundation supports its long-time partner, the SBMA, in the initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint with the SBMA locators and partner transporters/recyclers.

“We are delighted and confident knowing that the proceeds from our initiatives are in good hands. Every year, they (AFI) update us on the status of their projects under Bantay Kalikasan. We’re pleased that despite the small donations, we can help and contribute something that would benefit the greater good,” said Amethya Koval, Department Manager III of the SBMA Ecology Center.

The five-day event held last November 18-22, 2024, consisted of various activities and events that promote a carbon-neutral Freeport. Representatives who supported the event are the Bureau of Customs Deputy Collector Andrew S. Malcolm Calixihan, EPR Program Director for the Philippine Alliance of Recycling and Materials Sustainability Zedrick Avecilla, and Bluestem Philippines President Eva Adoremos. Meanwhile, Joechem Environmental Corp., ADL Envirotechnology Inc., and Foo Chi Trading & Resources Inc. were also in attendance as the official partner transporters/recyclers of SBMA.

Through this initiative, used batteries, untreated oil, and other recyclable trash will be handled and treated in an environmentally friendly manner. This approach minimizes the environmental impact and ensures that any recoverable value from these wastes will be donated to SBMA’s chosen charity and foundation while bringing hope for a more sustainable future.

“We are committed to being part of this mission and advocacy in protecting, conserving, and sustaining our environment. The ABS-CBN Foundation has partnered with individuals, organizations, or companies that share the same mission, passion, and advocacy in protecting our environment. This partnership is a testament to the power of finding like-minded partners and should inspire others to join us in this important work,” Sara Agcaoli, ABS-CBN Foundation Bantay Kalikasan’s Program Head, expressed.

The partnership between the ABS-CBN Foundation and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority in this endeavor is a testament to the collective effort towards a carbon-neutral future. As one of the beneficiaries of SBMA, ABS-CBN Foundation Bantay Kalikasan’s advocacies and projects will be supported. In the vision for a better environment, AFI and SBMA are dedicated in fostering social and environmental responsibility, setting an example for local government agencies, and inviting everyone to contribute to a more sustainable and greener future.
