The ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI) and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote the proper disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) last June 17. Through the ABS-CBN Foundation Bantay Kalikasan’s WEEE collection project, AFI and PEZA aim to promote green, inclusive and sustainable economic zones, while preventing hazardous wastes from impacting the environment and causing harm to human health.

PEZA Deputy Director General for Finance and Administration Maria Veronica F. Magsino expressed her message of support for the partnership during the MOU signing, stating that, “We are honored to join hands with institutions such as the ABS-CBN Foundation — known for its unwavering dedication to preserving the environment. Your advocacy aligns seamlessly with PEZA’s vision. Together, we both aim to transform what was once considered waste into an opportunity for awareness, for action, and ultimately for a lasting impact on the environment.”

“We, at the ABS-CBN Foundation, believe that it is our shared responsibility to extend the life of these materials to recover, reuse, and repurpose wherever possible. We are grateful to be working alongside PEZA, an institution that values the principal of a circular economy, where nothing goes to waste and every resource is treated with care and responsibility,” Lopez Feliciano on her thoughts about the partnership with PEZA.

Director General Tereso Panga also noted that, “In PEZA, we consider sustainability as no longer an option but an imperative. It’s something structured, technical, and metrics-driven mandate. We host a lot of export-oriented manufacturing industries. In the course of doing that, we generate a lot of waste. And the problem in the Philippines is that there are more waste generated than the available treatment facilities. And so, we welcome this collaboration where we can now work closely with private sectors like ABS-CBN Foundation.”

Through this initiative, PEZA’s electrical and electronic waste will be handled and treated in an environmentally friendly manner. Any recoverable value from these wastes will then be remitted to the Foundation that will support Bantay Kalikasan’s projects. The partnership between the ABS-CBN Foundation and PEZA demonstrates that everyone can contribute to a more sustainable future.
