To augment the relief operations, Sagip Kapamilya also provides rehabilitation assistance to families and communities that are heavily affected by disasters. Part of these rehabilitation efforts include rebuilding community infrastructure such as shelters, schools and water facilities – all to help rekindle the hope of the Filipino people.

Challenge

Apart from ranking as one of the top 5 most disaster-prone countries, the PH is also among the top 3 countries in the world with the population being exposed and vulnerable to hazards.

With Tyhpoon Paeng in 2022, more than 600 classrooms were damaged. In the same year, around 20 schools in affected regions also sustained damages from Typhoon Karding with more than 12 million learners affected. While in 2021, around 1.5 million houses were destroyed by Typhoon Odette.

These staggering numbers highlight the urgency to go beyond immediate relief assistance and provide rehabilitation to guide Filipino families back to normalcy as soon as possible.

Solution

Sagip Kapamilya is committed to impactful rehabilitation projects aimed at rebuilding critical infrastructure, including homes and schools, while also ensuring access to clean drinking water in underserved and disaster-affected communities. Part of the comprehensive rehabilitation initiatives, Sagip Kapamilya also championed the Legacy Project, construction of robust two-story, eight-classroom buildings, designed not only to facilitate education but also to serve as a resilient evacuation center during times of disasters. Beyond humanitarian aid and rehabilitation – which has been delivered for decades, the program also recognizes the essential role of disaster preparedness in safeguarding lives and minimizing the impact of disasters.

Natural disasters are very common in the Philippines and their catastrophic effects are felt by millions of Filipinos every year. While there have been many disaster resilient programs implemented in different areas in the country, there is still much to be accomplished, especially for communities in far-flung areas.

Solution

Recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach in disaster risk management, SK aims to work with a network of experts and other organizations to implement a comprehensive and area-specific disaster preparedness training.
